Why RVC matters on this generation

From 2005, GM moved these trucks to Regulated Voltage Control. The ECU decides what the alternator does based on battery state, temperature and load, and it will deliberately drop charging voltage to save fuel. That is fine on a stock truck and a problem once you add a large audio system, since the alternator backs off exactly when your system needs it most.

Mechman builds RVC bypass alternators for this platform that charge at a consistent voltage rather than deferring to the factory strategy. Choosing an alternator

Output ranges from 170 amps to 400 amps, all direct-fit to the factory bracket and plug. Output at idle matters more than peak rating for most car audio builds. Cast housings suit daily drivers and work trucks; billet and anodized finishes are available for show and competition builds.

Choosing a battery

These trucks use a Group 48 tray. The XS Power D4800 is a direct-fit AGM replacement with far better deep-cycle tolerance than the factory flooded battery, which matters if your system runs with the engine off.

Don't skip the wiring
