Which Jeep do you have?
Jeep spans several unrelated alternator applications. The 4.0L inline six used in the XJ Cherokee and TJ Wrangler is one. The 5.7L and 6.1L HEMI Grand Cherokee is another. The 3.8L and 3.6L Wrangler and Gladiator are different again.
Several of these platforms are shared with Dodge β the Durango and Dakota use the same alternator as some Grand Cherokee applications, which is why they appear here too.
Why Jeep owners upgrade
Overlanding and off-road builds are the common case. Winches pull enormous current, and a light bar, fridge, air compressor and auxiliary battery on top of that will outrun a factory alternator quickly. Recovery situations are exactly when you want charging headroom rather than a flat battery.
Audio builds in Wranglers are the other case, and a soft-top Jeep tends to need more amplifier power to overcome the noise floor.
Dual battery setups
If you are running a dual battery or auxiliary house battery for camping, the alternator has to charge both. Adding capacity is usually the right move before adding a second battery, not after.
Don't skip the wiring
