The 2019 redesign

RAM redesigned the heavy duty trucks for 2019 with a new body, interior and electrical architecture. The alternator and mounting differ from the 2008-2018 trucks. If yours is a 2018 or earlier, see the 2008-2018 page instead.

More factory electronics than ever

These trucks carry substantially more standard electrical equipment than earlier generations — large displays, driver assistance systems, heated everything, trailer brake controllers and integrated camera systems. All of it draws before you add anything.

Emissions equipment adds more. DPF regeneration and DEF heating are continuous background loads that earlier Cummins trucks never had.

Why owners upgrade

Fifth wheel and gooseneck towing with a full trailer electrical load, plus plows, upfitter equipment, inverters, air compressors and auxiliary lighting. Modern trucks start with less charging headroom than their reputation suggests.

Dual batteries

Replace both at once and match them. AGM tolerates diesel vibration and deep cycling far better than flooded lead acid.
