The LB7 is often a rebuilt truck

The LB7 is best known for injector failure, and a very large proportion of surviving trucks have had injectors replaced at least once — often with other work done at the same time. That matters here because harnesses get disturbed, connectors get replaced and grounds get moved during that work.

If your truck has been through injector work, check the condition of the charging cable terminations before assuming the alternator is your only problem. A poor ground after a rebuild produces symptoms that look exactly like a failing alternator.

Large case, not the gas truck unit

The LB7 uses a large case alternator that is physically different from the gas truck alternator of the same era. They look broadly similar. Make sure you are ordering the Duramax-specific part.

Side output stud

Some configurations use a side output stud rather than a rear stud, which changes how the charge cable routes. Check your existing alternator before ordering — your current cable may not reach the other position.

Dual batteries

Replace both at once and match them. On a truck of this age, one tired battery will pull a new one down to its own condition within months.
