Check whether you have an LB7 or an LLY

The changeover happened partway through the 2004 model year. A 2004 truck could be either. The LLY has a different turbo and intake arrangement, and the engine code appears in the VIN β€” confirm it before ordering anything engine-specific.

For charging purposes the LB7 and LLY share an alternator, so either page will get you the right part. The distinction matters more for the rest of your build.

The LLY runs hot

The LLY is known for elevated coolant temperatures under load, particularly towing, and a large number of these trucks have had cooling modifications β€” intake changes, fan clutch work, auxiliary fans. Electric fans in particular add current draw, and they run hardest exactly when the truck is working hardest.

If you have added electric cooling to an LLY, that load sits on top of the grid heater and everything else. It is a common reason these trucks outgrow the factory alternator.

Large case, not the gas truck unit

The LLY uses a large case alternator physically different from the gas truck unit of the same era. They look similar. Order the Duramax-specific part.
