Shared with the gas trucks

From 2007.5 GM moved the HD trucks onto the same charging architecture as the light-duty gas trucks, so the LMM uses the same alternator as a 5.3L Silverado of the same era. That is good news for availability — it means the full range of outputs and finishes is open to you rather than a narrow diesel-only selection.

RVC on a diesel

These trucks use Regulated Voltage Control, where the ECU varies charging voltage to save fuel rather than responding to what your electrical system is drawing. On a truck already running a grid heater and dual batteries, that is a real constraint once you add a plow, inverter or audio system. RVC bypass alternators charge at a consistent voltage instead. See voltage control.

Why LMM owners upgrade

Glow plugs and a grid heater pull hard on cold starts before you have added anything. Plows, upfitter equipment, inverters, winches and auxiliary lighting all come out of what little margin the factory alternator has left.

Dual batteries

These trucks run dual batteries. Replace both at once and match them — a new battery paired with a tired one gets dragged down to the weaker one's condition.

Don't skip the wiring

Dual battery setups mean longer runs and more connections, each dropping voltage under load. See our Big 3 wiring upgrade guide.
