Which platform do you have?

Tundra and Sequoia share applications across the 4.6L and 5.7L V8. The 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and Tacoma are a separate group. Land Cruiser splits again between the gas 200 Series and the 4.5L diesel.

Why Toyota truck owners upgrade

Overlanding is the dominant use case on this platform. A fridge, dual battery, air compressor, recovery lighting and a winch add up quickly, and most of that load runs at idle or with the engine off — exactly where a factory alternator has least to give.

The 200 Series Land Cruiser and Tundra are also common tow vehicles, where trailer brakes and auxiliary lighting add further draw.

Dual battery and house loads

If you are running an auxiliary battery for camping, the alternator has to charge both packs on top of running the vehicle. Adding charging capacity first is usually the right order — a second battery without more charging just moves the bottleneck.

Voltage boost for lithium

Toyota four-pin voltage boost harnesses are available in 1V and 1.7V steps if you have moved to AGM or lithium and need a higher charging target. See voltage control.
