The mechanical Cummins

The 12-valve 6BT is mechanically injected — the P7100 pump on 1994-1998 trucks needs no electronics to run the engine at all. That is why these trucks have such a following, and why they end up in swaps, conversions and rebuilds more than any other Cummins.

It also means the electrical system on a 12-valve truck has often been modified, simplified, rewired or replaced entirely. Factory charging circuits on these trucks are frequently no longer factory.

Single wire turn on

If your truck has been rewired, swapped into something else, or has an unreliable excite circuit, a single-wire turn-on alternator is usually the simpler install. It self-excites and needs only an output connection, removing the factory excite wiring from the equation entirely.

This is the most common reason 12-valve owners choose a specific alternator configuration rather than just an amperage.

Check which generation you have

The 1989-1993 first generation and the 1994-1998 second generation are different trucks with different brackets. The 24-valve arrived partway through 1998 — a 1998 truck could be either. See the 24-valve page if yours is a 1998.5 or later.
