Electronics arrive

The 24-valve ISB brought electronic injection to the 5.9L, which makes system voltage matter in a way it never did on the mechanical 12-valve. The ECM and lift pump both depend on stable voltage, and marginal charging shows up as running problems rather than just dim lights.

The lift pump problem

These trucks are well known for lift pump failure, and a great many have been converted to an aftermarket or relocated pump — often a FASS or AirDog system drawing more current than the original. That conversion is one of the most common reasons a 24-valve truck ends up short on charging capacity.

If you have added a high-flow lift pump, that draw is continuous whenever the engine runs, on top of the grid heater on every cold start.

1998 splits mid-year

The 24-valve arrived partway through 1998. A 1998 truck could be a 12-valve or a 24-valve. Check the engine rather than the model year — see the 12-valve page if yours is the earlier engine.

Single wire turn on

Available if your harness has been modified or the excite circuit is unreliable, which is common on trucks that have been through lift pump and wiring work.
